A 24-inch stump is one of the most common sizes we see. big enough to be a real hassle, small enough that people assume it won’t cost much. - Diameter at ground level. A 24-inch stump means roughly 24 inches across at the surface. That’s a solid chunk of wood. Larger stumps take more time and more passes with the grinder.
- Species. Oak is dense and hard. It grinds slower than pine or palm. If you’ve got a live oak or water oak stump, expect it to take longer than a soft pine.
- Root spread. Some stumps have surface roots fanning out several feet. Grinding those out adds time. If you just want the main stump gone, that’s one price. If you want the whole root system cleared, it’s a different conversation.
- Depth. Standard grinding goes 6 to 12 inches below grade. That’s enough to sod or replant over it. If you need to go deeper. say, for a concrete pour or a new planting bed. that’s more time on the machine.

Palm Stumps
Palm stumps are a different animal. The wood is fibrous and stringy, not ringed like a hardwood. They grind differently and sometimes faster, but they also tend to be taller above grade after a removal. A 24-inch sabal palm stump grinds out well with our machine. If the crew left the boot cuts on, those can add height above grade. but that grinds down the same way. Bottom line: palm stumps are generally on the lower end of the price range compared to a same-size oak.
Sandy Soil and Florida’s Stump Reality
Northeast Florida’s sandy soil does something that homeowners from other states don’t expect. It lets trees put down wide, spreading root systems instead of deep taproots. That’s why you’ll sometimes see surface roots running 10, 15, even 20 feet from a stump. When those roots die, they decay and leave voids under your lawn. When they’re still live at the time of grinding, they can push back against the machine.
Sandy soil also makes access easier in one way. our equipment sinks less than it would on wet clay. But it also means the grinding debris mixes with sand and creates a loose, settling fill. Storm season is worth mentioning here too. After a hurricane or a bad tropical storm, we often see a wave of stump calls come in. Trees that came down in the storm, stumps left behind after emergency removals. If you had a tree taken down after a storm and the stump was left because the crew was moving fast, that’s completely normal. Get it ground before the rains pack the soil around it and roots start to decay into a soft spot in your yard.
